It took a year but the Broncos’ controversial decision to allow Jason Elam to leave for free agency and replace him with Matt Prater has been vindicated. Today, the same day Elam was released for the first time in his 17-year career, Prater was named the AFC special teams player of the week. Elam had been the Broncos’ clutch kicker for 15 seasons when he and Shanahan, then the team’s coach and personnel boss, couldn’t agree on terms for a new contract. EGA5PCUR9CZE Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton missed a third consecutive practice Friday with a sprained left ankle. Backup Chris Simms again took first-team practice repetitions, as he has all week in the absence of Orton, who was injured during last week’s 27-17 loss at Washington. Simms is in line to make his first start since September 2006, when he suffered a life-threatening spleen injury while with Tampa Bay. Pittsburgh is a very physical team in every phase. If you are going to get out-physicaled offensively, defensively and in the kicking game, you are going to have a hard time winning,” McDaniels said. “It always gives me a laugh every time I see him get out of a meeting and hop in his little fake car, as I call it,” said Brandstater, the Broncos’ third-string quarterback. That “fake” car may not be the typical vehicle for an NFL quarterback, but it’s typical for Orton.
